Port Willunga beach and jetty ruins at sunset

Adelaide proposal location

Proposing at Port Willunga Beach

Port Willunga is the most cinematic beach near Adelaide. Honey-coloured cliffs, the weathered timber posts of the old jetty standing in the shallows, and a sunset that sets the whole sea alight. It is a 45 minute drive south and worth every minute.

Why propose here

What makes Port Willunga special

The jetty ruins and cliffs give you a backdrop with genuine drama and history, the kind of scene that makes a proposal photo look like a film still. It is removed enough from the city to feel like an occasion, and the iconic Star of Greece restaurant on the cliff above makes the celebration easy.

A styled idea for Port Willunga

A simple, elegant proposal among the jetty posts at low tide as the sun drops, kept light and uncluttered so the cliffs and ruins are the star, with the photographer up on the sand for the wide cinematic angle.

Best time to propose

The hour before sunset for the warm light on the cliffs, with the jetty posts catching the last gold. Check the tide carefully, a low tide exposes the flat sand and the base of the ruins; a high tide narrows the beach considerably.

Permits & setup

Port Willunga is in the City of Onkaparinga and a styled setup needs council approval. Tides matter more here than at any other Adelaide beach: at high tide the usable sand shrinks dramatically, so a planner will check the tide chart against your time and choose the safe window and spot.

Access & parking

Cliff-top car park with stairs and a ramp down to the beach (the ramp is the old boat ramp, steep in places). Not ideal for limited mobility. The cliff-top lookout itself is a beautiful, accessible alternative spot.

FAQ

Proposing at Port Willunga: questions

The cliffs and historic jetty ruins give one of the most dramatic and photogenic sunset backdrops near Adelaide. It feels cinematic and special, and the Star of Greece restaurant above makes the celebration easy.

More than at any other Adelaide beach. At high tide the usable sand shrinks a lot, so timing your proposal to a lower tide is important. A local planner checks the tide chart for your date.

It is about a 45 minute drive south of the Adelaide CBD. There is a cliff-top car park, though the path down to the sand is steep, so the cliff-top lookout is a good accessible alternative.
